• Captive rearing OSB larvae for release to augment wild populations
• Maintaining detailed and accurate records of all WPZ OSB conservation program activities
• Liaising with program partners U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Oregon Zoo, providing reports and summary documentation
• Evaluating and adjusting lab protocols, and writing Standard Operating Procedures
• Training and overseeing Animal Keepers and Exhibit Attendants in established OSB lab procedures
• Maintaining lab supplies, ordering and organizing inventory
• Helped to produce Woodland Park Zoo's first ever captive bred OSB larvae (in 2023)
• Designed research to document differential larvae survivorship, through controlled trials of larval diapause materials
2019 - 2022 Full-time Animal Keeper (Winter season)
• Caring for red panda, saki and colobus monkeys, tamarins, lemurs, and arthropods
2018 - 2019 Temporary Animal Keeper
• Working as needed with a variety of taxa, including grey wolves, elk, snow leopards, snowy owls, tree kangaroos, emus, keas, zebras, ostriches, budgerigars and others
SENIOR BIOLOGIST (2017) -> ASSISTANT CURATOR (2017-2018)
2017 - 2018 zoOceanarium Group/Worldwide Zoo Consultants, working at The Green Planet, Dubai, UAE
Helped to manage a small multinational biologist team in the care and husbandry of a wide range of animals living in terraria, enclosures, and free roam in a large tropical biome
• Supervised and mentored biologists while facilitating communication between biologists and the Animal Curator.
• Coordinated daily husbandry for herptiles, invertebrates, birds, and mammals, with a focus on reptile and amphibian husbandry. Herpetological species included milk frogs, dart frogs, tree monitors, basilisks, pythons, boas, geckos, skinks, iguanas, turtles, and others. The facility also contained a variety of tropical birds, such as macaws, toucans, parrots, turacos, etc., along with sloths, squirrel monkeys, tamarins, and invertebrate species.
• Prepared and maintained documents such as animal weight records, daily reports, and Standard Operating Procedures
• Presented biologist talks, and handled live animals (e.g. snakes, sloths, birds) while engaging guests in animal encounters
• Identified and addressed animal health concerns by liaising with veterinarians and conducting observations and follow up care
• Modified terraria and exhibits to increase animal visibility and to enhance visitor experience
WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST
January 2017 - July 2017 United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Ventura, USA
Contributed to the monitoring and management of the free-flying Southern California population of
California condors, in conjunction with the USFWS California Condor Recovery Program
• Used radio-telemetry and GPS to track free-flying condors, often hiking in difficult terrain
• Utilized ArcGIS to analyze condor spatial data and to prepare maps
• Conducted systematic observations of condor behavior and recorded associated data
• Maintained camera traps, and reviewed camera trap and remote (e.g. nest camera) video footage
• Trapped and handled condors for health checks, including blood draws in the field to test for lead poisoning
• Provided care for captive-bred California condors prior to release into the free-flying flock
• Entered and summarized condor data, including contributions to official USFWS reports
• Supervised condor monitoring technicians and guided volunteers in the field
